Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a term often used within the construction industry but is understood by very few people. The term is used to describe a process which the government is steering us to use within the construction industry to make us more efficient. This involves us collaborating together as architects, structural engineers, designers and clients using a common platform. Autodesk Revit is often used as this platform as it is multi disciplinary and can be used by each specialist field however this is not the only solution, remember BIM is a process and not any one specific software.
The design and collaboration process is about sharing models and information between industry sectors so that no one is in the dark. This will let us flush out any flaws or clashes during the design stage rather than at construction when it is costly to correct.
The information you put into a BIM project is the key to its success. This means using good quality families and loading the project with information as you design it. In return the software will be able to produce equipment lists that are loaded with all the information you need to quote or order from.
We embrace Autodesk Revit as a BIM / co-ordination tool for MEP services in order to produce fully co-ordinated models loaded with information on the maintainable equipment for each project. This allows the model to become an integral part of the services installation providing assurity there are no clashes. Not only that, as it contains asset information for the equipment we install, the model will provide the client with everything they need to identify, maintain and replace all aspects of the project in the future.
In order to get the most out of our projects and the collaboration process we use Autodesk BIM360 to host our models and 2D drawings. This gives everyone in the project access to the latest information and the ability to mark-up issues or raise RFI's as well as staying in the loop with this process from start to finish.
